The great Ice Cube once said, "You Better Check Yo Self Before You Wreck Yo Self!" Truer words could not be spoken by Cube! Now, this is not a post about Ice Cube so please stay with me here because we're going to talk about checkin' in on yourself!
If you're a freelancer or an entrepreneur, you've probably spent countless hours trying to build your business or keep your schedule full, leaving yourself with just enough time to sleep! Although, we don't have time to sleep because the hustle never stops! "Sleep? What is that?" "Well, what about taking care of yourself? You don't have time for that either! I can take care of myself later! I can take care of myself next week! I can take care of myself next month, next year, next decade, next century, etc!" Sound familiar? It does to me! We feel like we need to always be busy! If there are a couple of free hours in the day, then it must mean we didn't work hard enough!
There is such a thing as freelancer/entrepreneurial burnout but you're probably not aware because you're too busy! Regardless of how busy we are or think we need to be, we need to take time to check in on ourselves! Just recently, I've been setting a couple of reminders on my phone throughout the day to take 5 minutes, peel back the layers, and see "HOW AM I DOING?" So far, I've noticed I have better clarity and becoming more present! Don't get me wrong, it still hasn't been perfect because I still feel like I don't have 5 minutes to spare so I'll sometimes miss my check-ins!
If we don't take the time to slow down, eat well, exercise, and get good sleep then it can have negative effects on your health and keep you from aging gracefully! It can also cause damage to your immune system which we need more than ever with the Coronavirus still out there! Check yourself before you wreck yourself is what we entrepreneurs and freelancers should be doing to show up 100% for your business, your career, your clients, your colleagues, your family, your friends, and most importantly...YOU!!!
You probably have more time than you think! What does your schedule look like? Can you set aside 5 minutes twice throughout your day to check in on yourself?
